Seminar on Industrial Energy Efficiency Technology Demonstration “Improve Productivity and Profits through Energy Efficiency Initiatives”

The Malaysian Industrial Energy Efficiency Improvement Project (MIEEIP) a project implemented by Pusat Tenaga Malaysia and co-funded by the Government of Malaysia, United Nations Development Programme , Global Environment Facility and the private sector successfully organised a seminar entitled Seminar on Industrial Energy Efficiency Technology Demonstration themed “Improve Productivity and Profits through Energy Efficiency Initiatives” at the Crowne Plaza Mutiara Hotel, Kuala Lumpur on 4 August 2005. The seminar drew an impressive response attracting over 100 interested participants mainly from the local industrial sector.

Officiated by the Chairman of Pusat Tenaga Malaysia Y.Bhg Dato' Syed Hamzah Syed Othman, the seminar among others showcased the physical applicability and financial viability of implementing industrial energy efficiency projects. Five successful case studies were presented by factories from the ceramic, wood, rubber, food and steel sectors. The highlight of the event were the presentations of two successful energy efficiency projects implemented in Heveaboard Berhad a company from the wood sector and Johnson Suisse (M) Sdn Bhd a company producing ceramic products . These two projects are the first two projects in a series of 9 projects to be “demonstrated” under the MIEEIP programme.

Participants also heard the experience of other industrial companies such as Cardinal Health Malaysian Sdn Bhd, Cargill Palm Products Sdn Bhd and Malayawata Steel Berhad whose energy use was audited by the MIEEIP team. These companies have been proactive in implementing energy saving measures and have benefited in terms of energy savings and energy cost savings.

Another aspect of industrial energy efficiency focused during the event is the energy use benchmarking activity for the industrial sector, Participants were presented with the benefits of energy use benchmarking mechanism developed for industries and were encouraged to participate in this. The presentation by the Energy Commission touched on their activities in EE promotion, the proposed regulations and incentives available in relation to energy efficiency.

he dependence on fossil fuels as the source of energy has contributed significantly to the high emission of greenhouse gasses (GHG). Improvement in energy use efficiency is often a cost effective measure in mitigating energy waste and environmental degradation. In its pursuit to promote industrial energy efficiency the MIEEIP has planned out a series of seminars for the next year to showcase not only the abovementioned projects but also the remaining 7 MIEEIP demonstration projects which are at various stages of implementation at the moment. With this sort of promotional activities Pusat Tenaga Malaysia aims to encourage other industrial sites to replicate suitable proven energy efficiency technologies to effectively manage their energy and reduce energy costs.
