Firms Sign Voluntary Agreement To Produce Efficient Electric Motors

Eight companies from the electric motor manufacturing, supply and import industries in Malaysia signed an agreement recently to certify and facilitate the production of high efficiency and energy efficient electric motors in the local market.

Minister of Energy, Communications and Multimedia, Datuk Amar Leo Moggie said the High Efficiency Electric Motors Agreement was in line with the government's objective to increase the competitiveness of Malaysian-made products in international markets.Nine companies from the Malaysian refrigerators manufacturers and importers association also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to certify, promote and facilitate the production of energy-efficent refrigerators in the market today.

"While it may not be mandatory for manufacturers at the moment to adhere to the energy efficiency grading as provided with the signing of these two agreements, we expect encouraging support from manufacturers who want to upgrade or certify their products to world class standards," Moggie said after the signing ceremony on 4 December 2003.

He said the signatories of these two agreements accounted for about 85 percent of the refrigerators and 65 percent of the motors sold in the country.

The signatories of the High Efficiency Electric Motors Agreement were ABB Malaysia Sdn Bhd, GEF Precision Sdn Bhd, Jasakita Engineering Sdn Bhd, Kirloskar (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Siemens Malaysia Sdn Bhd, STE Marketing Sdn Bhd, TEM Engineering Sdn Bhd and Teco Industry (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

The signatories of the MoU on promotion of energy efficient refrigerators were Matsushita Electric Co. (M) Bhd, Scott & English Electronics Sdn Bhd, Samsung Malaysia Electronics (SME) Sdn Bhd, Sharp-Roxy Sales & Services Sdn Bhd, Toshiba Sales & Services Sdn Bhd, Antah Melco Sales & Services Sdn Bhd, Total Refrigeration Industries Sdn Bhd, Daewoo Electronics Sales Sdn Bhd and Hitachi Sales (M) Sdn Bhd.

Moggie said there was more Malaysia could do to use energy more efficiently.

"In fact, we perform rather poorly compared with our Asean neighbours such as the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand," he said.

The government is also committed to playing its part in the conservation of energy, he said.
