Energy efficient technologies usually come with a high price tag, and industries are often reluctant to invest in activities that do not have visible benefits to the productivity or profit levels. Besides, factories tend not to prioritise energy efficiency because of the relatively low price of energy.

In order to convince the industries of the importance of energy efficient technology applications, it is necessary to show them successful examples within similar working conditions. In addition to the actual physical working hardware, factories need to see evidence that such applications contribute to the improvement of the company's cash flow.

As such, the overall objective of this component was to demonstrate the applicability as well as the technical and economic feasibility of advanced energy efficient technologies in Malaysian industries. This was done by implementing one energy efficiency demonstration project in each of the eight industrial sectors in the project.

The programme also:
Disseminated information on the benefits of these technologies in the local industrial settings

Provided technical and economic assistance to industrial energy users.

Demonstration Projects of the MIEEIP

7 companies have been selected to participate in the MIEEIP demonstration projects, these factories are mainly from the 54 MIEEIP audited sites.

The demonstration projects each being at various stages of implementation, were carried out under 2 schemes, both aimed at capacity, building for the local industries and the ESCOs. Under the normal approach PTM worked with 6 of the 7 companies mentioned above as a joint venture. Whereas, the other scheme was implemented under the ESCO concept/ Fast Track approach , one demonstration project has been successfully implemented at Heveaboard Berhad a company under the wood sector. The case study on this demonstration project can be viewed at Mieeip 18

The financing of both approaches were partly from the MIEEIP’s RM 16 million Energy Efficiency Project Lending Scheme (EEPLS) set up for the implementation of the demonstration project. The EEPLS is being managed by the Malaysian Industrial Development Finance Berhad (MIDF).

For the normal approach, RM8 million has been allocated at zero percent interest. Loans of up to 50 percent of the project cost or RM 2 million ,whichever is lower , will be provided for the selected factories or host sites, which will have come out with the balance investment.
