Energy auditing is a proven effective energy management tool and has been practised by energy professionals in Malaysia since the 1980s. However, many industries are not aware of the benefits of energy audits. Those who do conduct energy audits for the factories often do not prioritise energy efficiency for financial and technical reasons.

The overall objective of this component then was to improve the energy efficiency levels in industries by promoting the practice of energy auditing. The programme's specific objectives are as follows:

Promote energy auditing as an effective tool for industrial energy management

Capacity building for local energy auditors

Develop a sustainable energy audit programme in industries

Maintain, calibrate and rent out audit equipment

Based on the preliminary audits conducted by the MIEEIP team, it has been found that there is high potential for arresting energy wastage or loss by improving the design and construction of industrial facilities. This area, was also explored by the MIEEIP team.

Since the project was aimed at a holistic approach to industrial energy efficiency, the Energy Audit Programme was closely integrated with Component 1 to provide the platform to obtain data for Energy-use Benchmarking and Component 6, to select the host sites for the Energy Efficient Technology Demonstration Programme.

What is Energy Audit (EA)?

Energy audits are a systematic study or survey to identify how energy is being used in a building or a plant. It is also a useful procedure to find out the best options for energy conservation. Energy audits provide an analysis of the amount of energy consumed during a given period in the form of electricity, gas, fuel, oil or steam. Using that information, it is also possible to list how the energy was used according to the various processes in a plant or at the various outlets in a building. The next step in an energy audit then is to identify the potential for energy savings accurately.

Energy Audit Findings

The MIEEIP has successfully conducted energy audits for 54 factories from eleven energy intensive sectors in Malaysia making it the largest ever national-based energy audit programme The first phase audit concentrated on 48 factories and the second phase on 6 factories. An analysis of the 1st phase audit findings from the 48 energy audits conducted by the MIEEIP showed that these 48 factories consumed approximately 934 thousand tonnes of oil equivalent (ktoe) of energy a year, or about 9.4% of the final commercial energy demanded by the eight targeted industries. The recommendation put forth by the audit team range from improvement in housekeeping for existing equipment, retrofitting or replacing key equipment or process, to the installing of cogeneration plants. According to the energy audits, if all measures recommended are implemented by each factory, electricity usage and fuel demand will be reduced by 7%. This translates into savings potential of 2.58 GJ of energy yearly.

The report below details the savings potential from all no cost, low cost and high cost measures of the 48 factories.

EA Guidelines

The MIEEIP team drew lessons from its work with the industries as well as experiences in other countries to formulate a set of guidelines for energy auditors, since there are no standard procedures on energy audits. The guidelines, compiled by the MIEEIP team includes, among others, planning an energy audit, the resources needed in an energy audit, analysis of data and information, basic know-hows for auditors regarding the various energy systems and preparing and presenting the audit reports. It is a practical guide for all industries and energy professionals, and is available at PTM.
