Retrofitting
of Cooling Towers at an Electronic Manufacturing Facility
– Energy & Water Savings, Year 2001 |
| Purpose |
To
carry out retrofitting of 4 x 1500 HRT Round Cooling Towers.(Total
flowrate of 1,900 m3/hr) |
| Descriptions |
Before Installations |
After Installations |
| |
 |
 |
| |
Rotating water distrubution sprinkler |
Stationary distributions system with non clog no 22/es |
| Retrofittings |
| 1. |
Replace
rotating sprinkler arms of the existing round type of
cooling tower with
a stationary low pressure water distribution
system c/w non-clog nozzles. |
| 2. |
Install a high performance Drift Eliminator system. |
| 3 |
Adjust fan pitch angle |
|
| Result in savings |
| 1. |
1°C
reduction in condenser water temperature was observed
(which theoretically would correspond to 2% reduction
of chiller compressor energy). |
| 2. |
Measured
water savings of 0.5% (from drift loss) of the total
flowrate of 1900m3/hr.
(Calculation 0.5% x 1,900 m3/hr x 24 hours x RM
1.50/m3 x 300 days/year equals to RM 102,600 per
year of water savings) |
| 3. |
Energy
Savings
a. Pump Head reduced by 3.5m (from 40m to 36.5m).
Pump Energy
= (Flowrate, m3/hr x Pump Head, M x Specific Gravity,
m/s2) /
(367 x pump efficiency)
=(1,900 m3/hr x 3.5 m x
1 m/s2) / (367 x 0.75)
= 24.2 kW
b. Total Fan motor kW increased by 15.3 kW after
pitching of fan angle.
c. Therefore nett Energy Savings
= 24.2kW –
15.3 kW
= 8.9 kW
Cost / year savings on power consumption
= 8.9 kWh x 24 hrs x RM 0.20 / kWh x 300 days/ year
= RM 12,816.00 |
